On Sunday July 31st, Mr. Tod Nielsen will join us live, to present the first part of a Special Two-Part Guest Speaker Series:
“Buddhist Arts Presentations: The Eight Great Events in the Life of the Buddha”
Mr. Nielsen is a member of the Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple & Meditation Center and has studied thangka painting under Tsherin Sherpa. He will walk us through the Eight Great Events in the Life of the Buddha, and how they are depicted in Buddhist arts from a range of cultures, styles, and mediums.

The Birth of Siddhartha;
The Enlightenment of Siddhartha;
The First Teaching of the Buddha (Turning the Wheel of the Dharma);
The Parinirvana (final Enlightenment / death) of the Buddha.

Covering the Four Lesser of the Eight Great Events:
The Display of Miracles;
Taming the Wild Elephant Nalagiri;
The Descent from the Heaven of the 33 Gods;
Accepting the Offering of Honey from a Monkey.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER :
Tod Nielsen has practiced Buddhism for over 35 years, and has been a member of the Blue Lotus Temple & Meditation Center in Woodstock, Illinois for the past 14 years. He previously lived in San Francisco and studied at the Tse Chen Ling Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center under Geshe Ngawang Dakpa, and volunteered at the Tsa-Tsa Studio where he studied thangka painting under Tsherin Sherpa and also cast tsa-tsas.
